Calling rest a “biohack” shows how far wellness culture has drifted from basic biology. Rest isn’t something you add. It’s the natural state of a human nervous system that isn’t being actively disrupted. The “hack” isn’t adding something that produces rest. It’s removing whatever is blocking rest from happening on its own.

This reframing matters because the add-something approach to rest — buy the supplement, use the device, follow the protocol — keeps you in an active, optimizing relationship with rest, which is the opposite of what rest actually requires. Rest isn’t something you do. It’s something you allow.

The evidence for the take-something-away approach is scattered across separate research that rarely gets connected. Light exposure after sunset suppresses melatonin production, delaying when you fall asleep and lowering sleep quality [1]. They have an environment that’s blocking rest.

Here’s the uncomfortable part for people who like protocols: the most effective fix is stopping things, not adding them. Stop using screens 90 minutes before bed. Stop eating within three hours of bedtime. Stop drinking alcohol within four hours of sleep. Stop working or consuming emotionally demanding content within two hours of sleep. Each of these removes a barrier — none of them adds a new tool.

The “take away” approach is harder to sell than the “add on” approach, because it takes discipline that no one can see. Buying a supplement feels like progress. Turning off the TV early feels like giving something up. But the biology here is clear: if your evening environment is set up to block rest, the most effective fix is changing that environment. No supplement can overcome a brightly lit room, a full stomach, and a busy mind.

A useful test: if you slept well on your last vacation without any supplements or devices, the problem isn’t your ability to rest. It’s your home environment. Try recreating vacation conditions — darkness, a cool room, a meal that ended hours ago, no screens — and see if rest comes back. If it does, you don’t need a protocol. You need to clear away the obstacles.
