Linda Stone, a former Apple researcher, coined the term in 2008 after noticing that roughly 80% of people hold their breath or breathe shallowly while reading or writing email — even when the content is completely neutral [1]. How it works matters more than the name suggests. Screen apnea isn’t a bad breathing habit you need to correct. It’s a startle response — your nervous system reading incoming information as an unknown and bracing for impact. Holding your breath is the physical sign of anticipating a threat. Your body starts preparing for the worst before your conscious brain has even read the subject line.

This isn’t just a figure of speech. The startle response is a well-studied reflex. When your brain notices something unexpected or unclear, it kicks off a chain reaction: your eyes widen to take in more, your shoulders rise to protect your neck, your torso tenses, and your breathing stops or gets irregular [2]. This is the same response your ancestors had to a branch snapping in the forest. Your email inbox is triggering that same circuitry.

Email is especially good at triggering screen apnea because it combines uncertainty with the possibility of social judgment. Email arrives unpredictably. It might carry demands, criticism, commitments, or conflict. Your nervous system can’t tell the difference between an unclear social signal and an unclear physical threat, because the body’s preparation for both looks identical. Holding your breath buys a fraction of a second where your system pauses to gather more information before responding. The problem is that email keeps arriving, and those breath-holds keep piling up.

Screen apnea is different from sleep apnea in one important way: you can fix it by changing your relationship with the information, not by changing how you breathe. Most advice suggests breathing exercises while checking email — pause, inhale, exhale, then read. That only addresses the symptom. The real fix is noticing that your nervous system is treating information as danger, and then redesigning your information environment accordingly.

Here’s a simple way to check: for the next hour of processing email, periodically notice your breath. If you catch yourself holding it, that specific message was a trigger. It might not feel stressful on a conscious level, but your body clearly disagrees — and that’s worth taking seriously, not brushing off. It’s the combination of uncertainty, unclear social content, and a felt sense of demand that triggers this response, not the content by itself [3].

The structural fixes that reduce screen apnea are the same ones that reduce decision fatigue: batch processing, cutting notifications, and setting specific response windows. But they help with screen apnea for a different reason. When you batch how you process email, you reduce how unpredictable it feels when it arrives. Predictable processing windows let your nervous system relax in between, because there’s no uncertainty about when demands will show up. You extinguish the startle response through predictable scheduling, not through breathing exercises.

One thing worth noting: not all breath-holding while on a screen is a problem. Brief pauses in breathing during focused work — sometimes called “task-related apnea” — are a normal response to concentrated attention. The difference is how long and how often it happens. Screen apnea involves extended or repeated breath-holds that build up CO2 in your blood and keep you in a stressed state that shallow breathing perpetuates. It crosses from normal to worth addressing when the pattern runs throughout the day, not just during moments of deep focus.

Linda Stone’s original observation was a diagnostic gift, not a set of instructions. Naming screen apnea isn’t valuable because it gives you something to fix. It’s valuable because it shows you what’s been happening without you noticing. Once you know your nervous system is treating your inbox as a threat, you have what you need to change your relationship with it. Your breath isn’t the problem. How your information reaches you is the problem. Fix that, and your breath follows on its own.
