Gen X’s Superpower: We Simply Do Not Care (And It’s Incredible)

Every generation has a thing. Boomers have hustle. Millennials have anxiety about hustle. Gen Z has anxiety about the anxiety about hustle and have made it an aesthetic.

Gen X has a different thing.

Gen X does not care.

Not in a nihilistic way. Not in a broken way. In a deeply, deliberately, productively unbothered way that took years of practice and one too many times watching the world hype something up and then immediately disappoint everyone.

How We Got Here

We were teenagers during the era of the After School Special, which meant we watched a lot of very sincere adults try very hard to warn us about things using extremely theatrical scenarios. We were sold on the promise that things were going to be great, then graduated into a recession. We were told to follow our dreams and also that jobs came with pensions, and exactly one of those things turned out to be true.

At some point, you either spiral or you shrug. Gen X shrugged.

It wasn’t giving up. It was calibration. It was deciding, consciously or not, that the amount of energy you spend caring about things should roughly equal the amount of control you have over them. Which, in most cases, is not that much.

Not Caring Is Actually a Skill

Here’s what “not caring” looks like in practice when you do it right:

  • You don’t need external validation to feel okay about your choices
  • You can walk away from things that aren’t working without a lengthy grieving process
  • You don’t spend three hours crafting a response to someone being wrong on the internet
  • You hear “what will people think?” and genuinely don’t know how to find that concerning
  • You have a very short list of things worth getting worked up about, and everything else just… doesn’t make the list

This is, it turns out, very close to what therapists mean by “emotional regulation.” Gen X was doing it before it had a name. We called it “whatever” and it worked fine.

The Part Where This Is Actually a Strength

Gen X operates really well in chaos because we don’t need the chaos to stop before we can function. We don’t need everyone to agree before we make a decision. We don’t need a situation to be fair before we figure out how to work within it.

We just… deal. Quietly. Without making it a whole thing.

If that’s not a superpower, it’s at minimum a very useful trait that the world keeps needing and consistently failing to appreciate. Which is, honestly, extremely on-brand for Gen X.
