A long-running Harvard-affiliated study[1] just put a number on something a lot of people suspected but couldn’t quantify: how much your grocery cart might matter for your brain, decades from now.
The study
Researchers followed 5,370 older adults (average age 64, 55% women) for nearly nine years, from 2012 to 2020, tracking diet through questionnaires and cognition through standardized testing every two years. The findings, published in the American Journal of Public Health, split participants by how much of their diet came from ultra-processed foods — packaged snacks, sugary drinks, and industrially manufactured items built from refined ingredients and additives, as opposed to whole or minimally processed foods.
The numbers
People eating the most ultra-processed food had a 58% higher risk of developing dementia and a 46% higher risk of developing cognitive impairment without dementia, compared to the lowest consumers. Flip it around: the group eating the most whole, minimally processed food had a 41% lower dementia risk and a 24% lower risk of cognitive impairment than low consumers of those foods.
What’s likely driving it
This is an association study, not a controlled trial — it shows a strong link, not proof that ultra-processed food directly causes dementia. The researchers point to a plausible chain: diets heavy in ultra-processed food are linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated LDL cholesterol, and all four are established risk factors for cognitive decline in their own right. The brain effect may run partly or entirely through those metabolic pathways rather than being a direct effect of the food itself.
Either way, the practical signal holds: shifting the balance of your plate toward whole, minimally processed food is one of the more evidence-backed dietary moves for long-term brain health, alongside the same cardiometabolic basics — blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol — that show up in nearly every longevity conversation.
