What Generative AI Does to Your Thinking

The worry about generative AI is that it makes you dumber — that outsourcing your thinking to a machine causes your mental capacity to decline.

The risk is real, but the diagnosis is slightly off. Generative AI doesn’t make you dumber. It makes your own thinking process invisible to you.

Autocomplete Cognition

When you use a language model to finish a thought, the line between your idea and the model’s version of it starts to blur. The output shows up as natural language, coherent and believable. You read it and think: yes, that’s what I was going to say.

But it isn’t always what you were going to say. Often, it’s what the model would say given your prompt — a statistically likely answer, not necessarily the exact thought you were forming [1]. The difference is subtle and hard to spot, because both show up looking the same: fluent, polished writing.

The problem isn’t that the model’s output is wrong. Often it’s correct, or at least reasonable. The problem is that you can’t tell where your thought ended and the model’s finish began. The line blurs. You stop holding onto the half-formed idea and working it out yourself. You outsource the struggle — and the struggle is the part that actually builds the skill.

This is autocomplete cognition: the model finishes your thought before you’ve fully formed it, and you adopt the finished version as your own. It feels collaborative. It feels efficient. But the cost is that you never build the skill of finishing thoughts yourself.

The Invisible Bypass

The problem with autocomplete cognition is that it skips over the most important part of thinking: the process.

Thinking isn’t the output. Thinking is the process of holding a half-formed idea in your mind, weighing it, turning it over, trying different angles, rejecting some, refining others. This process is effortful, slow, and often uncomfortable. It’s also the part that actually builds mental capacity.

Generative AI makes this process invisible by handing you the output without requiring the process. You type a prompt, you get a completed thought back. It feels like you thought something and the model just expressed it for you. But that feeling is misleading. The model expressed something — maybe related to your thought, maybe not — and how easily you received it makes it feel like your own.

Over time, you stop noticing the difference between your own thought and the machine’s version of it. You stop holding onto the half-formed idea and working it through yourself. You outsource the struggle — and the struggle is the part that actually builds the skill.

The Skill That Atrophies

The skill that fades is the ability to hold a half-formed thought in mind and work it through to a finished idea without outside help.

This is a specific mental skill: keeping an unfinished idea in mind while you evaluate it, revise it, and build on it. It’s the process that produces original thinking, and it’s exactly the process generative AI skips.

If you never practice turning a vague instinct into a clear argument on your own, you lose your mental efficiency at doing it [2]. The pathways weaken. Your tolerance for the discomfort of unfinished thinking drops. You start reaching for the model earlier and earlier in the process.

The shift happens gradually. First, you use AI for first drafts of routine messages. Then for summarizing your analysis. Then for strategic thinking. Then for creative work. Each step moves the line of what you do yourself. That line doesn’t move back on its own — it takes deliberate effort, which is reassuring, because it means the direction is up to you.

Reclaiming Active Thinking

The fix isn’t to stop using AI. It’s to use it on purpose and to also practice thinking actively without it.

Regularly producing output without any AI help — writing, reasoning, analyzing — isn’t about getting a better final result. It’s about the process itself. Working through a thought to completion, making mistakes, revising, and arriving at something that’s genuinely yours — that process is the point.

The practical routine: mark certain kinds of work as AI-free. First drafts of personal writing. Analysis of data you actually care about. Strategic thinking about your own decisions. In these areas, the quality of the final output isn’t what matters. The process is the goal.

The test is simple: can you write a coherent paragraph about something you care about without opening a chat window? If the answer is no, your active-thinking muscle has weakened — and that’s fine, it’s a starting point, not a verdict. The good news is that it rebuilds quickly with practice. Ten minutes of unassisted writing a day, for two weeks, will bring the capacity back. The only real question is whether you’re willing to sit with the discomfort long enough to rebuild it.
