Mattress shopping is one of those purchases where the marketing noise (“cooling gel infused memory foam!”) drowns out the two or three things that actually determine whether you’ll sleep well on it. Here’s how to cut through it.
What actually predicts a good fit
- Sleep position. Side sleepers generally do better with more contouring and pressure relief at the hips and shoulders; back and stomach sleepers usually want firmer support to keep the spine neutral.
- Body weight. Heavier bodies tend to need a firmer core or hybrid coil support so the mattress doesn’t bottom out; lighter bodies can get away with softer all-foam options.
- Temperature. If you run hot, hybrid mattresses with coils and breathable covers generally outperform dense all-foam builds, which trap heat.
- Motion isolation, if you share a bed. Memory foam and pocketed coils absorb a partner’s movement far better than old-school innerspring.
- Trial period and return policy. No showroom test tells you how a mattress feels after 30 nights — a real trial window matters more than almost any spec sheet.
Categories worth knowing
Memory foam tends to win on pressure relief and motion isolation, and loses a bit on temperature and edge support. Hybrid (coils plus foam layers) is the most broadly forgiving option across sleep positions and body types, which is why it dominates most “best overall” picks. Latex sleeps cooler than memory foam with a bouncier feel, at a higher price point. Firm innerspring still has fans among back and stomach sleepers who want minimal sink.
A practical shopping approach
Start with your sleep position and any recurring pain (lower back, hips, shoulders), not the marketing category. Buy from a company with at least a 90-night trial. And don’t assume more expensive means better fit — the right firmness for your body and position beats a higher price tag every time.
